What exactly is Hung-Sing Choy Lee Fut?

You know the history of Hung-Sing Choy Lee Fut, but what is this style composed of? Hung-Sing CLF is a 70/30 hands/kick art form. This means 70% of the art is hands and 30% of the art is kicking. Of course, each instructor brings his own style of the art, and Sefu Chad Myers has studied many different arts and has found numerous additonal applications, such as throws, to forms that are not easy to discover.

What is expected of me?

The one the thing I desire most is a respectful student who is humble and eager to learn. Humbleness is by far the most desired attribute that the school stresses. We have a saying: "Come to class, with an empty glass." An overflowing glass needs no water, likewise a self proclaimed all-knowing student needs no knowledge. While along the lines of humbleness allow me to quote Abraham Lincoln: "Any man can withstand adversity, but giving a man power will test his true character."

When, Where, How much?

We meet Monday through Wednesday at the Marvin Pittman Gym 9 to 11 PM (8 PM optional). As of now there is no cost, but this is all subject to change pending the effort given in class.

What if I am not interested in the culture?

That is okay. We all have our own reasons of training, however I promise you that you will understand forms and movements better if you know the culture. Also, we take annual trips to Fut San, China and San Francisco, and knowing the customs will help you interact with the people in the cities. In order to show respect to foreign customs, one must first know them. Plus, by being respectful to all, not just your kung fu elders, one learns so much more.

Am I fit enough?

Kung fu was originally made for the average Chinese physic, very light and small, but it is not limited to this body type. In fact, given the strength and build of the many athletic Americans, Hung-Sing CLF can be used to devastating potential. Then again, also because of the American build, you will probably need to stretch CONSTANTLY. A balance of physical endurace and power is essiental. Our workouts will definetely lean torward the aerobic side. I am more than willing to work out with those who just want to get in shape. I have been involved in weight training for eight years, and have studied gaining weight through healthy diets for six years.

How fast will I learn this?

That is totally up to you and the effort that you give. I will say this, however, we teach traditional kung fu. In other words, even if you come everyday we will be learning the basics for a good while, which will provide a good base for advanced techniques. I guarantee that it will seem monotonous at first, but the only secret I have heard of for successful kung fu is practice, practice, and when you get sick of it practice a little more...

What about the self defense?

Hung-Sing CLF is designed not specifically to attack (though it does look out of control sometimes when attacking) but for defense. There are many wonderful self defense applications, which we go over often.

What shall I wear?

I don't have a preference. But I am all about the kung fu pants and wushu shoes, they are just so comfortable. School colors are black, red, white, and every now and then...yellow. When in doubt of the color, choose black. For martial arts supplies click on my links page!

Traveling?

We will take monthly trips to see and train under Sefu Chad Myers. And once a year we usually go on a trip to China or San Francisco.

When can I spar?

Because we teach traditional kung fu, we will make sure the student has a very compatent knowledge of the basics, thus it will probably be a long time before you even begin to spar.

I wanna fly like Chow Yun-Fat in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and move with the speed of Jet Li!!!

Seriously, this is not a movie, though I love them, current martial arts movies are mainly just for show and not many applications. You really want to do those things? Then go train in wushu...
